The short answer is that I was very ready to have a relationship with a
Master and based on my TM experiences, I was devoted to MMY even before I
met him. I was also very impressed by some TM teachers, especially Jerry
Jarvis, and my Satyanand, who taught my first residence course with Jerry
(Cape May, NJ, 1979). When I finally met Maharishi at Poland Spring, 1970 I
was totally blown away by his darshan. I had already listened to many tapes
and was familiar with his wisdom and sense of humor. But his darshan was
palpable. My consciousness was profoundly elevated in his presence. Had he
started using the title "His Holiness" back then, I would have had no
problem with it. I spend a fair amount of time with him over a 16 year
period, often sitting or meditating right at his feet, being in small
meetings with him, etc., and I almost always had this experience. The last
time I saw him was in Noida, fall of 1986. There were lots of late night
meetings in the garden with Purusha and Mother Divine in attendance. Many of
them were business meetings in which Maharishi deliberated over the price of
Amrit and stuff like that. I remember one evening around 2 am a German
Purusha sitting next to me said, "Here we are, in the land of the Veda, at
the hour of ghosts, talking about money." Somehow the irony of that comment
struck a chord. I could go on, but to get to your second question, the
cognitive dissonance was not so great as it would have been had I become
aware of the situation years earlier (and as it is for some on this list who
are probably being exposed to such information prematurely). I don't feel a
close attachment to MMY anymore, so I'm OK. But as you can tell, it still
doesn't make sense to me, and so I still try to hash it out. I guess the
crux of the issue for me is, why would someone in as high a state of
consciousness as I assumed M had attained do something like this? I guess
the question begins to answer itself if you broaden it to include a lot of
other screwy stuff he's done over the years. Or maybe it doesn't. As Peter
says, he's an enigma. The mind will never sort it out.
