Great post, Barry! It definitely relates to me and Waking Down, as
the whole process (for me, at least) is driven by the gazing
meditation. However, I only got a high from it a couple times at last
year's Estes Park retreat. Most of the time it's just mildly
pleasant, neutral, or somewhat unsettling. And, for the first year or
so, the effects afterward were brutal in that they initiated a
free-fall into all the internal shit I'd been trying to avoid and not
feel for decades.

I like your analysis of darshan, and the mechanics are likely an
accurate description of what happens in gazing, however, because of
Waking Down's unique "spiritual DNA", to use the term Saniel Bonder
uses to describe the different nature of the various awakening
traditions, the effect is probably quite a bit different from most
darshans. I felt a bit woozy being in the hall with MMY those few
times, but it never had the effect of sinking me up to my eyeballs in
the dung of a thousand sleeping elephants.
