It serves to distract us from the worries of the world. Which btw, may be exactly what TM is about. All this talk about enlightenment and expanded consciousness is just a cover. Mostly we do it because it feels good.
There is more to art than distraction. Film has the potential to educate, uplift and challenge. A few filmmakers take risks and work in that direction. I appreciate them, not everyone does. I have been known to go a long ways out of my way to see an avant garde work displayed in a remote gallery. I have a hard time with Idol because I never really liked pop music, but I do have my guilty pleasures. One of my favorite stupid shows is "Beauty and the Geek". s.
