My own theory is that there are a host of 'causes' of OCD and the
like. The physiological characteristics of someone with OCD make them
more prone to OCD behavior patterns and various stressful life
experiences can trigger/exacerbate these behavior patterns in ways
that are often associated quite obviously with stressful life
experiences.

Calling these behavior patterns a "defense" may help in devising
therapeutic strategies that work with SOME people, but they may not
help with others.

As far as I can tell, my OCD tendencies were generally very minor
until I spent 3 years living and working, often 24/7, in a mold
infested apartment. My ADD tendencies were highly exacerbated also.
