The murder trial of former Maharishi University of Management student
Shuvender Sem, who suffers from schizophrenia, has drawn attention to
the illness, but doctors and mental health advocates say high-profile
cases like Sem's can contribute to public misunderstanding of the
disease.
Russell England, a psychiatrist at the Chautauqua Clinic in
Fairfield, said schizophrenia is probably genetic in origin, a
chemical imbalance in the brain caused by biology rather than a
person's upbringing.
"It usually has its onset in the late teen years and there's
usually a slow deterioration, a steady progression," he said.
England said the exact symptoms depend on what part of the
brain is being affected, but they often include hallucinations --
auditory hallucinations, or "voices," are the most common, but other
senses can be involved as well -- and delusions.
