Good one. Cindy does hava NY accent. I was brought up on Long Island
but always eschewed the accent. Comes out in me sometimes when I get
very excited, animated or intense (which, fortunately, still happens
quite often). I would be interested to know where people on this forum
are from, originally (prefer this lifetime answers).

Also, I'm interested in accents, types of speech, etc. In college
(Bucknell - Did you see them beat Kansas in the NCAA basketball this
year?) I had a roommate who wrote a paper about teaching English as a
second language to black kids in NY. I thought it was a joke (I mean
he had to be kidding, right?). This was in 1973 and how many years(?)
later I hear about ebonics and think : "Man that guy was a smart f****r"

Ever notice how Asian kids that are born here don't have ANY accent,
even though you can often barely understand their parent's English?
I live around lots of Hispanics (I sell Real Estate - 70 of my clients
are Hispanic) and most of their kids speak English with a "Bato"
accent, even though they were born here.

Any ideas?

Jeff

PS The ebonics guy I mentioned above scripted a "Western" night we had
at our frat (loved that frat - We were the only one on campus that no
one could categorize - we were so diverse). There was the Mayor,
sheriff, rustlers, barkeep, etc. He wrote the roles with instructions
on how you were to "act" to make it authentic. He even found some
people with horses about 10 miles from campus and got them to bring
them and build a hitching post right in front of the house.

BUT, the funniest thing was this. We had 2 guys who were complete
druggies - always out of it. I asked "Reggie" (nickname - formally
Reginald Van Dildo) "What the hell are we gonna have these guys do?" He
thought for a moment and then started typing: Town estheticians -
They eat peyote, look at the moon and Talk to God. AND they did!

Man now I know I'm getin' old. This forum has brought out quite a
number of reminisces. I miss ole Reggie.
