The term "enlightenment" in South Asian
literature is the "liberation from the cycle
of death and rebirth"; the transcendence of
phenomenal being; a state of higher consciousness,
in which causation are understood as maya.

In Adwaita, enlightenment is termed "Moksha",
the dispelling of illusions. In Buddhism, the
doctrine of enlightenment is termed "Nirvana",
extinguishing the five aggregates from the
cycle of rebirth.
