I'm speaking generically, Lawson. The very *structure* of many spiritual organizations is emphatically "top-down," with the spiritual teacher "in charge" and everyone asked to assume that he or she knows what's best. The issue I'm talking about arises when someone, concerned about where such an organization seems to be heading, expresses his or her concerns to the teacher "in charge" in as polite and respectful way as possible. In a few organizations, such information is considered, and may even be adopted as feedback for possible "course correc- tions." In others, you can literally feel the wave of shock go through the room as students gasp at the fact that one of their number has dared to suggest that the teacher might be wrong or ill-informed. For me, the big question is how does the *teacher* react? If he or she reacts as if the student has committed some kind of cardinal sin, then the organization, IMO, has no *possibility* of "course correction." Feedback is being actively discouraged. If the teacher reacts well, then some possibility of "course correction" exists. It is my opinion that there was never any possibility of "course correction" happening as a result of external feedback to Maharishi. Same thing in the Rama trip. But in other organizations I've seen, it happens all the time, and the teachers are grateful for any useful information. As for what the "destination" is, that is for history to decide, not us.
