Apparently yes.  The x-rays take minutes and the flares a few days.  We 
may not have any known history of a big one actually hitting the earth.  
Of course there might be a reason for that.  ;-)   It would indeed be an 
unfortunate coincidence if the earth were in the path of a big one.  
Most probably just go off into space not hitting any planets.
