Which pretty much had little or no effect. People were medicating themselves back then, just self-medicating, using cigarettes and alcohol. A lot of it got swept under the carpet, eg, often times the most "pious" and upstanding had the worst alcohol/domestic problems. And nobody was talking about depression or any other mental conditions.

We've come a long way. Drugs are now grossly over-prescribed, but that's not the drugs' fault. Many work and have saved lives. But the insurance companies and some doctors prefer to wait until people get sick rather than encouraging prevention.
