--I think rather than trying to"defeat"p.t.ie make them look ridiculous Castaneda was trying to make the point that the petty tyrants in our life(that is people who have power and abuse it eg bosses etc)are people from whom we can learn how not to be emotionally reactive or self important (the latter two things are closely related).Mastering the art of dealing with petty tyrants means we have gone a long way toward losing our self importance and increasing our capacity to not take things that others do personally.This in turn has the effect of increasing our personal power which ironically makes much us more effective in dealing with petty tyrants or anyone else. (getting involved in "battles" with petty tyrants/others can be very draining-dealing with from them a place of non-attachment eliminates this loss of energy s.t. which was very important in Castanedas system)Kevin
