The metric used to compare companies is important and problematic. Do
you use market capitalization, revenues, profit, customers? Which best
represent "media influence"? And use of customers is problematic in
that many media companies lay claim to the same customer. Who "owns"
the customer? 

Following are some media related industry groups and their market
caps. Followed by the top five media companies. They account for less
than 27 % of the total media industry. 

Defining what companies constitue "media" and what portions of their
activity is media related is also problematic. I think these figures
are conservative for the excludes companies like Microsoft and Apple,
which are increasingly becoming media players. And excludes "gaming
companies" -- which is increasngly improtant media "content. And
excludes media companies such as NBC because they are part of GE, a
much larger primarily non media company and a equivalent market cap
figure is not quickly derived.
