Brief? John Kerry served for several years. His official "on shore" time in Vietnam was only 4 months with the swift boats, but he had served off-shore 20 miles or less from Vietnam on a ship for about 12 months or so before that. He made Navy First Lt before he left service. That's the equivalent rank of an Army captain.
