Tonight, thanks to the wonderful world of media piracy, I got to watch the pilot episode of the prequel to "Battlestar Galactica," 5 days before it is broadcast in the United States. Yo ho ho and a bottle of cyber-rum.
And lemme tell you, it's very, very good. sparaig is just gonna fuckin' love it, because it's all about virtual worlds, entertwined with religion and robots and SciFi out the wazoo. Suffice it to say that if you found "Battlestar Galactica" worth watching, you're going to be glued to the TV for "Caprica," too. I won't spoil anything for anyone, but also suffice it to say that in just the first episode, set 50 years before the Cylon war and the events of "BG," you'll know where the monotheism of the Cylons came from, and why it was at such odds with the polypantheism of the Capricans and the society of that particular future. And you'll also know where their fanatical fundamentalism came from. The cast is excellent -- Eric Stoltz, the always marvelous Paula Malcomson (Trixie in "Deadwood"), Esai Morales, and a host of young actors led by a surprisingly good Alessandra Toreson (as Zoe, the "soul of the machine"). It's a winner. Two cyber-thumbs up.
