My suspicion is that there is some effect, but that it's due to the changed consciousness of the drug experimenter, not to the drugs. That is, all the drugs really do is open some pathways into previously- unused ways of thinking and states of attention. The drugs don't last, but these states of attention some- times do, and if they do, and in large numbers of people, it might affect society as a whole. In a very real sense, how else can one explain the late 60s, and the amazing effect that a few (*very* few, no matter how many claim to have been there, done that) hippies had on the sensibilities of the world for a short time?
