My suspicion is that there is some effect, but that 
it's due to the changed consciousness of the drug
experimenter, not to the drugs.  That is, all the
drugs really do is open some pathways into previously-
unused ways of thinking and states of attention. The
drugs don't last, but these states of attention some-
times do, and if they do, and in large numbers of
people, it might affect society as a whole.

In a very real sense, how else can one explain the 
late 60s, and the amazing effect that a few (*very*
few, no matter how many claim to have been there,
done that) hippies had on the sensibilities of the 
world for a short time?
