Jeepers. But it's an *online parody site*. Its
only purpose is parody. It doesn't report news
(although it does parody current events). It
may have a print edition for all I know, but its
primary presence is on the Web and has been for
some years. And it doesn't have a particularly
Midwestern orientation.

To call it a "Midwestern paper" suggests a
publication along the lines of the Des Moines
Register.

Its shining hour, in my opinion, was shortly
after the 9/11 attacks. Its 9/26 issue had a
series of absolutely brilliant pieces that
made you laugh and cry at the same time.

One of them was an interview with the terrorists
in hell, reporting their astonishment at finding
themselves there, enduring excruciating agonies,
when they'd fully expected to be in Paradise
being serviced by beautiful virgins.

If your raison d'etre is to make fun of things,
what the heck do you do in the face of horrific
tragedy? The Onion somehow managed to figure out
just what combination of humor and pathos would
evoke a desperately needed catharsis, without
ever slipping into bad taste. An extraordinary
depth of compassion went into creating that
issue, it seemed to me.
