They didn't get very good training then :)  With the technique I teach I 
have answers and yes most of them are similar to what is in the TM 
checking procedure.   And that is most of the time people are straining 
on the mantra.   If they aren't and nothing is happen we can tell them 
just to go with it and usually good experiences return.  Just like TM 
good experiences will come and go.  We may in addition mention that diet 
and environmental situations can effect meditation so we don't put much 
emphasis on experiences.  And we may have some additional tips too.  I 
would suggest reading Swami Sivananda's "Mind Its Mysteries and Control" 
downloadable here:
http://www.dlshq.org/download/mind.htm
and first published in 1935.  It will show you that checking points are 
nothing new.
