Originally quoted at a public talk by Dr.
Helen Caldicott, referencing a study by
the organization Médicins sans frontieres.
Their figures were based on number of pre-
scriptions written, which is easily trace-
able and researched in the medical data-
bases. If you want a more definitive
source, find it yourself. I wouldn't have
believed it myself until my contracting
work in the Midwest, when the subject came
up once and it turned out that I was the
only person on my team *not* taking
antidepressants.

Interestingly, the same organization just
released similar stats for France that
indicate that the usage of antidepressants
here is even higher. That took me aback.
I asked my personal doctor here (whose
practice is in the affluent 7th arrondis-
sement) about it and he shook his head
and said, "The percentage among my patients
is probably even higher. They come in and
request the drugs; I almost have to prescribe
them."
