Study a bit of history. Power and self interest IS the story of religion. It shouldn't be. They all start well, as an emanation of Someone Who Has Caught A Clue. Many of the Clueful were probably enlightened. And yet the eternal story of so many religions is that within two generations of the death of the founder, the religions formed in their name become about power and self interest. Sometimes it doesn't even take that long. Wars have been fought for -- and by -- the clergy of these religions. Fortunes have been made, kings and queens tumbled from their thrones. ALL in the name of religion. Sometimes it's politicians using the religion as a cover, to make their actions seem more 'holy.' Some- times it's clergy using the politicians, for the same reason. As someone once said so well, "It's a DOS planet."
