Haven't seen any collection of red lights in Fairfield outside of
the Christmas season, and I've never been to that area of New
Orleans, so I can't contrast Amsterdam with those. But I do
occasionally walk by the raunchy district of Hollywood as there
are a few good dance clubs in the area. My opinion:

Prostitution is legal in Amsterdam and thus is far more open
than in Hollywood. The tradition there is for women to rent
a room with a floor to ceiling picture window about 3-5 feet
wide in order to display themselves dressed in underwear.
The spaces are usually lit with blacklights, so their underwear
is often exceediingly well lit, bringing attention to the areas
of their bodies that experience tells them most men pay
attention to, and that many men will pay money to access.

It's actually less grubby, less dangerous, and less potentially
traumatic than in Hollywood. But it's WAY denser - some
blocks will have 40-50 women on 2 - 3 floors, and there will
be rowdy crowds of British/German/American 18-50 year-old
tourists, usually quite drunk, milling about on the alley/street
below making stupid comments or chattering excitedly about
the scene.

I guess it's the in-my-face part that bothers me. In Hollywood,
I can ignore the 2-3 people who may or may not be streetwalkers
as I proceed on my way, but in Amsterdam ignoring isn't
possible.
