I've never had that experience myself.  But Muktananda says that seeing a snake 
during meditation is very auspicious.

I have had, on two occasions, the classical "snake slithering along the spine 
experience."  It literally felt as if a snake was inside my body.  Had I not 
had at least some understanding of kundalini and its relation to snakes and all 
that, I can see how I could have had really big problems dealing with it.  
Instead, I rather enjoyed the experience.  But I can see how people can really 
freak out without some intellectual understanding when such experiences happen.
