Since all we know for sure is what his friend's email said and his paraphrase of what he said back--when the exact words might make a big difference--the discussion has been pretty much hypothetical anyway, i.e., about generic friendship, "Rick" and "Rick's friend" becoming, in essence, convenient labels for two hypothetical people. So I'm hoping Rick doesn't take all this too personally--or for that matter take offense at being taken hypothetically...
