It appears that some people lie, some exagerate, some cite facts they
believe to be true, but are not, some use logical fallacies to make a
point -- thinking they are correct, some use slight of hand to fake
people out, etc.

If one simply supplements the "mistake" by introducing the proper
facts (with cites), a la 'well, actually it appears that xyz is
100,000, not 10,000 -- at least per this cite" it is digested well by
most -- even by the mistaken poster.

Its when claims of motives, intents and character get involved, that
flame wars start up and most readers tune out. To correct a mistake or
lie is good. To claim someone is a liar, or someone has the intent to
decieve, is not generally productive.

If someone repeatedly posts mistakes or lies, and their facts are
repeatedly challenged and corrected, readers will draw their own
conclusions about the persons veracity and reliability as a source. I
suggest that there is no need make explict claims about the posters
intentions or character. Such barbs and claims, not settling anything,
often nuke the good spirit of the list and discussions.

(oh, and its against the FFL guidelines) :)
