That was a pretty radical thing to do at that time. Hardly a
conservative move on their part, IMHO.


Actually a moral thing to do considering the declaration of Independence says that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. The same moral justification to protect the lives of the unborn. While the founding fathers allowed the institution of slavery to continue when writing the Constitution they also put the mechanism in place to destroy that institution in the future. The abolitionists worked through the Republican party, not the Democratic party.
