A book I've often recommended, esp. for folks who belong/belonged to various Hindu meditation groups is "Aghora At the Left Hand of God" by Robert Svoboda. It's a real eye-opener for all who dare to read it, and it's great bed-time reading. Another great bedtime book is Buddhist Masters of Enchantment: The Lives and Legends of the Mahasiddhas, which is written in the form of tales of individual saints, from temple whores and thieves who became fully enlightened buddhas to kings and pundits who did as well. The intro. was once posted here, as it tells the bizarre story of the illustrators own awakening. A more detailed volume by the same translator, adds the actual sadhanas and lines that emanated from the Mahasiddhas, these adepts which "practiced Hindu-dharma by day, and tantric Buddhism by night", Masters of Mahamudra.
