It is difficult, if not impossible, to reconcile the core teachings of Shankaracharya Swami Brahmanand Saraswati (Guru Dev) with the TM teachings of MMY.
Guru Dev teaches that the nature of the mind is to become attached, whereas MMY's teaching is that the nature of the mind is to wander. Guru Dev teaches that repetition of the mantra will send the mind flitting here and there. MMY, on the other hand, suggests that attention to the mantra will settle down the mind. Guru Dev advocates contemplation, whilst MMY speaks out against contemplation. Guru Dev advocates 'remembering' Paramatma. MMY distinctly discourages such remembering. --- In [email protected], "Premanand Paul Mason" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > The following information is contained in 'Amrit Kana', a selection of > quotations of Shankaracharya Swami Brahmanand Saraswati published in > 1950, compiled by Brahmachari Mahesh Ji, later to be known as Maharishi > Mahesh Yogi. > > Guru Dev states that both mantra-japa (silent mental repetition of a > mantra), & dhyana (meditation/contemplation) of the swarup (personal > form) of the god should be practised together in order to worship > Paramatma (God). > > He argues that doing japa (repetition) alone, the mind will flit here > and there.
