The Vedas enumerate Mantra Yoga, which was brought
to India around 1500 BC, long before the historical

It's not clear whether or not the historical Buddha
used mantras in yoga or not, but it's a fact that
both Chinese Buddhism and Indian Buddhism make use
of mantras since 500 AD.
