YouTube doesn't squash videos. All my recent ones have been 16:9. What was probably missing was the 16:9 flag in your file. Blame that on Windows Live Movie Maker. There must be a setting or it was just a "job" done by developers who care little about film or video and don't actually know much about it. Try playing it with different players such as VLC which might be more honest than Windows Media Player. I use the Magix Movie Pro 17 which can often be found for $20 or free at Fry's after rebate.
