A friend of mine, Rob Freeman, worked on a zombie movie in Africa (the first, last and only zombie movie shot in deepest Africa for many reasons) which you may find interesting:

Rob ended up in a broom closet in a local hospital, lying on a spare table for several weeks with malaria, for example. The crew had to bribe the local highway men every day in order to get to the shooting site. Etc.
