Yes, I'm sure being an editor makes a difference.
Just for one thing--and this is common but not
universal among editors--both reading and writing
for me has a very strong auditory component; I
"hear" the words in my inner ear.  I think that
increases sensitivity to nuance, especially with
regard to tone; it's a sort of multimedia effect.
