Must it necessarily be an "advance technique"?

How about plain and simple human fallibility?  Or perhaps rudeness?  
Or maybe short-term memory loss?  Or maybe self-centeredness that 
doesn't take into account the feelings of others?

...all done fully in accord with the laws of nature, of course...
