I'm a hardcore flincher, and I *really* dislike shooting high caliber rounds.
One time, I was at the range with a friend of mine, and he had an old .30-.30
lever action with him. He kept insisting that I take some shots with it, and I
finally agreed. I've always used scopes on my rifles, and all that thing had
was iron sights. So, I took careful aim, pulled the trigger, !!!!! BLAM !!!!!,
hit the target about 3 inches from the bullseye at 100 yards. Not bad,
considering the sights and caliber. But, I was so rattled by the recoil that my
second shot didn't even hit paper. Gimme a .22 or .223 any day.

Haven't actually done any shooting since I used my brother's Model 1894
.30-.30 Winchester actually made in 1894, octagon barrel. Mighty fine rifle.
Never could hit much with a revolver, but the last one I fired was a .347
Magnum so maybe if I used a lighter caliber....

My recollection is that open carry is legal in Iowa but highly restricted.
However, a couple years ago, they passed a law that made concealed carry
available in all counties. Before that, it was up to the local sheriff's
department, and the JeffCo sheriff had a long-standing policy of never issuing
concealed carry permits. Now, there are tens or hundreds of JeffCo residents
with permits.

I used to have a handgun (Beretta 92FS), but when I discovered I couldn't hit
a paper plate at 10 feet, I got rid of it. Rifles and shotguns are more my
speed. And, while the Ruger semi-auto .22 plinker rifle has its charms, I'm
more a bolt action kinda guy.

IMO, anyone doing open carry to make a statement is a pitiful pencil-dick.
Sure, if you're a rancher in rural bear country, keeping a .45 strapped to your
waist is a damn good idea. But, if these urban open carry idiots had any
smarts, they'd be carrying concealed.

Another US news story to make Ann happy!

Yes, so happy. What is interesting about this article is that it clarifies
something with regard to why "law abiding" citizens feel the need to carry guns
which is that they don't feel safe in their lives. The mention of the drug
dealers in this particular area points to the justification these people use to
want to openly carry weapons. So, a lack of faith in the ability of the police
to deal with or provide safety for the average citizen is apparent. But what is
so strange is that these people think by carrying a gun they are going to be
safe. All the gun toter is going to get for his trouble is to get hit by the
first bullet in a shoot out. No criminal is going to shoot the unarmed guy
first if there is a gun holder in the room. And look at this guy standing in
front of the target - all puffed up and "manly" 'cause he owns and shoots guns.
