What a crock of nonsense. What you ignore and what TM has never been able to mask is the fact that TM is touted as being a practice that on all levels imaginable MAKES YOU STRONGER, no weaker. But you claiming that the TM'ers have to creep around telling each other the "sweet truth" is indicative that TM makes you weaker - or at least it would appear so since in addition to TM, one needs all sorts of Movement related nostrums to make you safe, healthy and so on. What a big load of baloney.

But empathetic and virtuous action is mostly cultural, learned and cultivated by good up-bringing. There can be a virtue there around meditators actively protecting other people's subtle spiritual systems. That empathy (sweet truth etc. hopefully out of an empathetic concern for others' subtle system finer values) protecting other people's subtle systems could come from the group and meditating while by contrast for some poorly raised ignorant brutes or the spiritually clueless without transcendent meditating, they know not what they are doing.. That quite evidently is different than the cultivation which transcending alone can bring to the mind and possibly to upper registers of the subtle system. Is likely proly why folks could often observe the TM community is without 'heart'. That kind of comment about TM being without heart certainly goes back to 1970 when this quote was made. Transcending simply itself evidently as a practice is not necessarily directly about cultivating the heart as a spiritual center. More work to do while you are here.. that adjunct of heart work becomes part of a back-story to where the meditating community has continued on towards with its spiritual cultivation. -Buck Yes, it is interesting to read this particular quote again now with the perspective of time and see where these cultural norms of TM-ishness came from. This was quite a formative quote at the time for what became permissible. It reads all over the place and ambiguous now but it was influential legacy. -Buck netineti108 writes: Have you followed the dialogue in this group over the years that developed from TM'ers ? Forwarded from: David Hooper <davehoopermpp@...> 9/21/14-Maharishi: When one starts TM, cruder values are replaced by finer values, speech is less sharp "…Children do say, 'Now, Mummy today you haven't meditated.' When they find a little roughness [in the mother], they say, 'No, you should meditate.' Children remind mothers to meditate. [This is] the effect of Transcendental Meditation, the children know that when Mummy has meditated she doesn't mind their mischief so much. Their crude behavior is overlooked, and they're all loved more and more and more. It's recognized by the children that right from the moment one starts to meditate, cruder values begin to be replaced by finer values, and this is what is called virtue -- finer values of life, more delicate values of life, more 'yes' and less 'no's,' more acceptance, less rejection, more tolerance, less sharpness. Otherwise, one is sharp here and sharp here. These sharp remarks even though true they don't help very much. Many people say, 'I am truthful and that's why people dislike me because I say something to their face.' Truth is not characterized by whips. If you speak truth, fine, the truth is there, but it should have some sweetness to it. Manu, the first lawgiver to the human race, said about speech: 'Satyāṁ brūyāt priyaṁ brūyāt na brūyāt satyam apriyam' Speak the truth, speak that which is sweet, don't speak the truth which is not sweet. Not that you can take liberty with the truth and massacre the whole field of behavior. Speak the simple, natural truth which is supporting life, which is nourishing life. Truth is always life-supporting if it is really truth, but it must come from a melted heart and not from a very unconcerned mind. No. So the moment TM begins, [there is] culture of the heart and culture of the mind,....." ~Maharishi~ ~Humboldt State University -- August 12, 1970 -- Audiotape~ * * * * * * * 1.
