Salyavin, Hitchens appeared to have echoed a similar thought coming from a Jewish rabbi who said many years ago that God needs some help in correcting the apparent errors in the world. Also, another Jewish writer, Elie Wiesel, said that he could never forgive God for letting the holocaust happen.
These are interesting human perspectives from Jews, who are supposedly God's "Chosen People".
