Neutered? France has one of the highest birth rates in Europe, second only to Ireland. :-) Politically, while France is no longer the imperial power it once was, its people are *far* closer to the country's revolutionary spirit than Americans, in my experience. God *help* the French administration that tries to fuck with what the French consider "basic rights." The last time an adminis- tration tried (in 1999), the French staged a nationwide general strike. Nothing moved in France -- no trains, no planes, no taxis, no Metros, no trucks, nothing. There were no services like garbage collection; only the hospitals and emergency services were excepted from the strike. The result? The French government caved in and abandoned its plans to change the disputed policies in less than two weeks. It could happen in the US, too, if Americans were actually willing to sacrifice two weeks of their oh-so-precious salaries to make a point and stand up for what they believe in. ------------------------ Yahoo!
