I don't think so. It was Britain that put wartime bills onto the national
credit card.(FACT: in 2015 Britain finally paid off the last of its World War
One debts!)
It really seems to have been the massive increase in expenditure of the US
government that kick-started your economy which in turn created a "virtuous
circle" of greater profits and larger pay packets. Win-win.
If so, I can't see why doing the same thing in peace time but spending the
money on homes and hospitals wouldn't have the same effect today. This is why
economics has always been a complete mystery to me.

I never understood that. How can you splurge all those dollars on warships,
tanks, aircraft, . . . , not to mention the ginormous expense of the atom bomb,
. . . and all those bombs, bullets and shells "thrown away", and instead of
becoming bankrupt you end up filthy rich.
Cleopatra was defeated. The Romans then confiscated the immense treasure of
Egypt. So a profitable enterprise for Octavian. I get that. But the USA didn't
ransack Japan or Germany.
Is there an economist in the house?
