The Gohonzon (all Gohonzons, inscribed by Nichiren - 13-th century Japan and 
his successors), is a mandala or depiction of the Totality of existence, 
wherein the Whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  The various characters 
depicted are not addressed by those chanting to the Gohonzon.  Such entities 
are shown in a hierarchical fashion from the top (The Buddhas), to the bottom 
(the less Sattvic entities). Some of the Devas are also mentioned by name
