Therefore his public speeches at the time of Shankaracharya-ship reflects that role. What do we know of pre-Shank. public lectures? More importantly, what do we know of the *private* teachings, the pith instructions he gave? The fact that many of the lectures we have could be from the Shank-period could filter what we are seeing/hearing and thus be different what his own personal teaching would be.
