To me, it shows the tragedy of the closet and the havoc wreaked by the
pressure to live a lie.

impression is that this is very seldom the case. Had Jack and Ennis
lived in a society where it would not have been a problem for them to
live a life together, they'd have never needed to enter sham
heterosexual relationships, causing pain and suffering for all parties
