I'm not sure recording mix has a whole lot to do
with the quality of the music as evaluated over the
long term, though.

When the son of a friend of mine (she's my age) was a
teenager, he wasn't a big fan of the Beatles, but he
adored Dylan, loved Elvis, and went completely bonkers
over Rudy Vallee.

As far as performance is concerned, we still listen
to Caruso on tinny old recordings, and it doesn't
seem to get in the way of an appreciation of his
musical talents.

It was also just *good music*. Same with Elvis, same
with Rudy Vallee. Musical *quality* is independent of
fashion, cultural or political.

Sometimes a particular style of high-quality music can
get lost for long stretches of time (Bach as musical
genius is a fairly recent realization), but it usually
gets rediscovered at some point.
