Spirituality and Morality in the Fourth
Millennium.
On rare occasions we can
be known to see a few moves ahead in the game of chess; and sometimes with
certainty in the case for forced positions. But to imagine what the human
existential experience, and social set-up will be like in 3005, and for that
millennium, is impossible; and a thousand years is a long way off in human
terms. We have no idea as to what will be discovered, what inventions will come
along, what people will desire and what will motivate them in consensus terms in
a thousand years time. Indeed, humanity and maybe the world itself, will not be
here in a thousand years time; but I feel sure that it will be; and albeit much
different from today. Thus, any comments or speculation upon that in this day
and age is mere conjecture; or in some aspects of it one might say even
prophetic :- ) And humanity and
consensus awareness evolves as do most things here in time and
space. When it comes to such things as a consensus
spirituality and morality and understanding of things, I would imagine that in a
thousand years time folk will look back on this period of history, the twentieth
and twenty first centuries, as some kind of late antiquity wherein the social
paradigm slowly began to evolve into a very different mode of existential
existence on earth; and wherein, because of the speed of change, and the degree
of it, many found themselves at a loss to comprehend the rapidly changing social
set-up and their place in the scheme of things; and hence a deep seated
alienation in psychological terms for many. And probably by virtue of this the
degree of falling back into ancient superstitions and or new age speculations,
and also the psychological escape by way of drugs and drink, or inventing
enemies to keep them occupied and amused, etc. But
we know well enough that there are some aspects of both spirituality and
morality which do not change in time - and to say nothing of the depths of the
human mind/psyche itself. What is
new is always changing, but that which things are based upon, and the inner
and deeper structure of these things, exist now, as they did thousands of years
ago, and still will be in thousands of years time; and no doubt all time. Thus, one can only speculate upon the
things which are known not to change, and conjecture as to how that will be
addressed and put into living social practice at any time in the close or way
distant future; and irrespective of the high or low state of human civilisation
and technology at any one point in time or history. Society is but a thin veneer on our
existence, and can wax and wane by virtue of many things, including natural
disasters, climatic and ecological change, etc. But the human mind and the inner
structure or psyche of our being is old indeed; and although the surface or
top-side cutting edge of this evolves, the basics and its foundation do not.
Hence some things will always be the same; no matter where and when incarnate
life manifests and has its existence here. In
the living memory of people of my own generation things have changed quite a
lot. Over the last one hundred years a large percentage, if not a small majority
now, have walked from the old superstitions and the doctrinal religious
indoctrinated state belief systems; and it is a matter of the records that
although there is a drastic decline in religion and churchianity year by year,
there is no decline in what people now call spirituality (as opposed to
religion). Indeed, there seems to be a growth and renewed interest in it. And whereas over the last two or three
thousand years many, or the majority, were prepared to accept what they were
told to believe in, in this day and age the majority are not. That is a small
step in a couple of hundred years for society, but it is a giant leap in the
human experiential paradigm in potential for things to come. In a nutshell
people are now asking their own questions and seeking for their own experience
of spirituality, one way or another, and their moral stance comes from within
them (as it indeed should do anyway) rather than being inflicted upon them from
outside. State laws of conduct will of course always
have exist (unless we become perfect), and can be enforced, and indeed should be
where need be. But morality, just like spirituality and living experience,
cannot be enforced; laws do not change what a person is; they simply try to
control what they do about what they are and where they are each AT. But even state laws which apply to
morality were based upon the existing paradigmatic understandings of any society
at any one time in history. But just as people learn and move on by way of
experience, or evolve in awareness and understanding, then so too must the laws
of a nation state, or the whole world, come to evolve and change by virtue of
it. So, how will this be applied in
a thousand years hence one wonders? The
evolution of human beings on earth and their societies do not evolve in the same
way and with the same constant regularity with that of a ticking clock; but
rather in fits and starts; long periods of little change and then sudden thrusts
forward, and which then settle down again into quite spells. But both the ability for man to leave
this planet, and the mass social rejection of indoctrinated spirituality and
morality, are both sudden bursts and thrusts forward. And it is these things, not simple
everyday technology and existing doctrinal belief packages, which will shape
things from this day forth; and with a potential for vast social change within
the next few thousand years. It
has long and often been said, that the experience of being alive on this world
will not improve for the majority until people want and demand that it improves;
and they will do so, as they always have in the past, by way of how they see,
feel, and understand things and their place in the scheme of things. That more and more people are now
seeking inward answers and their own inner understanding of the deeper purpose
of being and again addressing the perennial questions of being, is a good and
constructive thing. The incarnate
human mind innately seeks answers, and observes all things therefore; but to an
extent this natural process has been
put to sleep, or into hibernation at least, for the last couple of
thousand years by cultural dogma and vested political interests. One can predict with reasonable
certainty therefore that in due course this awakening and effort made by people,
will benefit humanity and life on earth (or wherever else they might be
existing) in at least a thousand years time from now. And today is always the foundation stone
of the society of tomorrow.
I
would predict that things which have been known by a small percentage of people
in all past generations will be known by the vast consensus by the time the
fifth millennium arrives. The root of being is always what it is, but the
becoming process of individual human beings, and hence society at large,
evolves; like a tree from a seed.
Existential life on earth is nothing like it was a mere five hundred
years ago when this old cottage which I live in was built ah, if walls could
tell stories eh maybe they can if we could read them. But our own mind and psyche certainly
does, and one can read them well enough for the time at hand. The instruction manual/guidebook is
inwards and the package is built upon it; and knowing our deeper self reveals
it. And what we can do now, then
they of the future will also do; and what those long ago also did. Some things never change, even in time;
they just become more commonplace; and thus more effective in mainstream
society. Life is not just about
BEING, it is also about BECOMING - becoming the more in Form as we are in our
Essential mode of BEING at root. A
kind of liberation from the egg :- ) Here is life and existence my love, do with
it what you will, and your destiny from here on in is in your own hands; and by
your own acts will you reap what you sow. Dick Richardson To subscribe, send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/ and click 'Join This Group!'
