It's more that he's self-consciously ACTING.  He's never
just the character; he's always Jack Nicholson-playing-
the-character.  He never seems to lose himself in a role,
except for that one time, that I've seen.  And he's
supposedly a "Method" actor, too.

You *never* saw Brando--also a Method actor--being Brando-
playing-a-character, even when it was an over-the-top role.
He was always subservient to the role itself.  He may have
been furiously calculating effects every second, but it
never *showed*.  With Nicholson, you can always see the
acting wheels turning.
