Lawson is referring to a series of photographs on a
poster, of course, not a scientific study.  I'm pretty
sure you remember it.  And as Lawson says (but you
conveniently snipped), by the time the poster came
out, TMers were well aware only hopping was going on,
so they had no problem interpreting the series of
photos correctly.
