Honolulu in early 1972, just after ZZ-Top opened a big concert for the
Rolling Stones here in Hawaii, and from all reports they stole the show and
had two standing ovation encores, even though the Stones were waiting to
come out to play, which is where Billy and Keith Richards first hit it off
as pals.
I picked Billy up at the Rome airport after the long flight half way round
the world and drove him straight to the Forum in Rome where Brutus stabbed
Caesar 2 millennia ago and sat him down on the same steps, pulled out some
scissors and cut his hair, since at the time we had just instituted the
'dress code'.
I then stuck him in a little hotel room in Fiuggi where he started immediate
rounding for 3 months of his TTC and was miserable within a couple weeks,
having gone from large cheering and adoring crowds on tour to a cold hotel
room with a broken heater in the late winter of the Italian mountains! I
went to see him one day and he was in tears which we conveniently
rationalized away as 'unstressing" and encouraged him to keep a stiff upper
lip and plow on ahead :-).
There are a million and one such stories from back in the day that are
pretty amusing.
