> So Brahma gets aggravated if you're a little off-center? This is a total non-sequitur, but have you all read Roger Zelazny's novel "Lord Of Light?"
It was a classic of science fiction, winning the Hugo award, and it's wonderful on its own merits. But what might make it interesting to TMers is that it's a reinvention of the Hindu pantheon. On a world far away from Earth (which is now either gone or forgotten), the orginal settlers have tech- nologically given themselves the names and attributes of the Hindu gods. They live above the planet in an atomic-powered Brahmaloka that floats in the sky, and they dole out equally technological reincarnation to the people they keep in poverty and ignorance on the planet itself. Into this world comes one of the other original settlers, a troublemaker they thought they'd gotten rid of, and he's the Buddha figure. His name is Mahasamatman, but he prefers to drop the Maha- and -atman and just call himself Sam. It's a wonderful book. You gotcher siddhis, rakshasas, hanky-panky among the gods and goddesses, and even enlightenment. What's not to like?
