...ACLU issued the statement from its Executive Director Anthony D.
Romero: "[This is] one of the worst civil liberties measures ever
enacted in American history. The president can now, with the approval
of Congress, indefinitely hold people without charge, take away
protections against horrific abuse, put people on trial based on
hearsay evidence, authorize trials that can sentence people to death
based on testimony literally beaten out of witnesses, and slam shut
the courthouse door for habeas petitions!"

The ACLU's critics point out that habeas corpus protections were never
intended to apply to terrorists and other sworn enemies of the USA.

The last paragraph is such a horror of double talk. Habeas corpus
protections were CERTAINLY intended to apply to all US Citizens. Now a
private panel appointed soley by the president can deem any US citizen
as an enemy combatant, even for "aiding" such.

It is not inconcievable that a letter to and editor, a protest march,
a blog, a yahoo group post that criticizes adiministrations policy
could be deemed aiding and abetting the enemy. Such things were
common during vietnam -- and are today during the Iraq war. Critics
are told to be silent else they aid the "enemy".

If such a conclusion is drawn behind closed doors by the presidents
panel that you are aiding the enemy, it is possible, it is NOW legal,
to throw you in jail, even executed, with no due process. A knock on
the door and you could be gone. Outrage! The founding fathers are
turning in their graves.
