FWIW, Madonna on Oprah yesterday, about what
the child's father told her:

"And he looked into my eyes, and said to me that he was
very grateful that I was going to give his son a life,
and that had he kept his son with him in the village, he
would have buried him."

Madonna thinks (according to Oprah's Web site) that
the media got to the father, barraged him with
questions and confused him, and then twisted what
he told them.

Not impossible that's what happened. The media
would certainly have been looking for negative
things to report, even if they had to largely
manufacture them.
