Its interesting, this phenomenon where people in groups dedicated to TM, meditating and turning inward, lose their energy, get depressed, and become less successful. My experience is that TM is a victim of its own efficiency in this regard. As a very efficient technique for transcending, use of the TM technique leads quickly and reliably to a direct experience of the Self, the impersonal infinite foundation to life. With this emphasis on TM, those on MD and THP confront what I call the 'charm war' very quickly. This charm war manifests itself as no less than the battle to the death between the self, who we are accustomed to being, and the Self. Each is dedicated to killing the other. Anyone having a long-term interest in spiritual pursuits builds up in waking state a number of stories regarding Self-realization or enlightenment, what enlightened life is like, how to act, what to do, etc. Unfortunately for such stories, TM efficiently provides the direct experience. I recall facing this disconnect between what I was hearing, believing and most importantly interpreting about enlightened life, and my direct experience of the Self. I was literally at war with myself, making ever more complex stories to justify myself on the one hand, and my experience of my Self during TM. I became stiff, angry and depressed. Only when I began feeling what was going on and taking many many careful chances to break out of this inadvertent trap did I regain the limitless energy provided by TM. Until that occurs, these folks on MD and THP will remain at war with themselves, suffering from depression and lack of success.
