Well actually there are a lot of neat, easy things you can do from the command line. For example when you go to save things, there is this "sheet" that appears, which comes out at default rather slow, you can adjust the speed of this. You can change actually a large number of settings this way. I like to have the debug menu visible in Safari for example. There are a number of free apps out there which will do this for you--and turn the changes off again if you like. An important one to do regularly if you don't keep your Mac on overnight is the cron commands, as these will execute the various maintenance tasks.
