We should remember that Indra is apparently not infallible.  He 
failed to respect the aspect of wisdom, as represented by Jupiter.  
As such, the demons started winning the war against the demigods, 
Indras subjects.

As king of the demigods, Indra appears to concentrate more on the 
level of enjoyment and benefits of the good life.  Any one who does 
not agree with this becomes his enemy.  Specifically, Indra even 
killed his own guru, Vishwarupa, because the guru gave some of the 
yagya leftovers to the demons.
